A. Because the thin skin on the ear can be extra sensitive, some people may have allergic reactions to certain metals when used in earrings. You may develop a rash and the area may become itchy and sore, leading to possible infection if not properly dealt with. However, this can be avoided by foregoing cheaper metals and making sure you are wearing high-quality earrings. Metals such as 14k gold, sterling silver, and platinum are generally a safe bet — it’s extremely rare to have an adverse reaction to these metals. If you’re still experiencing discomfort when wearing your high-quality earrings, you may want to make sure they aren’t fastened too tightly around the ear. This can cause soreness that may be confused for an infection.
Q. What types of earrings does Shane Co. carry?
A. Shane Co. carries a wide variety of styles, with unique options for every budget. Here are some of our most popular types of earrings: Studs: Studs are small pieces of jewelry, featuring only a piece of metal that goes through the ear (known as the post) and a solitaire diamond, sapphire, ruby, pearl, gemstone or all-metal piece that is held on the front by what is known as the mounting or basket. We offer sapphire, ruby and diamond stud earrings in the widest range of sizes. To ensure consistent beauty in ever pair, the stones are hand-matched by our jewelers. Hoops: Hoops are circular bands of metal, sometimes accented by diamonds, gemstones or other intricate detailing. Dangle: These hang below the earlobe and have movement — they can come in smaller or larger forms, depending on the style. Threader: Threaders feature a chain that is attached to a metal post. One end of the chain portion is inserted through the piercing hole, leaving a dangling effect on either side of the piercing. Statement: Statement earrings can take many different forms. They invite favorable attention from others by showing off unique and bold designs. This can mean a sparkly pair of hoops, colorful dangle earrings or other eye-catching styles.

Q. How do you take care of earrings?
A. Regularly cleaning your jewelry is important, not just for aesthetic reasons but also to prevent bacteria from collecting on the earring and causing possible infections. Because earrings are worn flush to the ear, it’s not unusual for the natural oils of your skin, hair and skin products to cause them to dull in shine and even appear dirty to the naked eye. Thankfully, it’s easy to keep your earrings clean and sparkling with just a few simple steps. Note: Pearl earrings require special care and should generally only be cleaned with a damp cloth. For all others, you’ll need warm, soapy water and a soft-bristle toothbrush. You can either soak your earrings in the solution for up to 30 minutes first, or simply use the toothbrush to gently scrub them with the solution, getting rid of any trapped dirt or debris. Finish by wiping your earrings with a dry, clean cloth. You can also bring your jewelry into your nearest Shane Co. store as often as you wish to receive a free cleaning using our ultrasonic and steam cleaning machines.
Q. Where did earrings originate?
A. While there is no recorded history of the first official wearer of earrings, we do know that this piece of jewelry became popular a very, very long time ago. There are references to earrings in the Bible, as well as archaeological evidence that Persian men wore them in the city of Persepolis around 500 B.C. Gold earrings have been found that date back to ancient Egypt around 1200 B.C., although some archaeologists suggest that these were worn mainly by children, since they were found in the tombs of child kings. In pop culture, pirates are often depicted as wearing gold earrings, as they would be used to pay for transportation and funerals if the sailor didn’t survive their voyage. Since then, this unique piece of jewelry has gone in and out of fashion, according to clothing, style and even moral trends of the time. They grew in popularity throughout the 1950s and have been a staple in fashionable jewelry since then.
Q. How do you style earrings?
A. The amazing thing about this piece of jewelry is that it comes in so many different styles, it’s nearly impossible not to find a pair to go with every outfit. We recommend finding some matching sets, like diamond studs with a beautiful diamond pendant, for a cohesive look that you can wear every day or on special occasions. Statement earrings are perfect if you’re looking to add a little color or sparkle to an outfit, while classic 14k gold hoops and similar styles look great with a T-shirt and jeans. The options are endless with Shane Co.’s wide selection of exclusive designs, created by our world-class design team. All of our jewelry is crafted with our customers in mind and backed by our Free Lifetime Warranty, which means your jewelry is protected — for free, for life.
Q. How do you care for newly pierced ears?
A. Ear piercings are much less risky than other body piercings, but complications can still occur if your new holes are not treated properly. Here are a few tips on caring for newly pierced ears: • Leave your earrings in for six to eight weeks, even at night. If enough time is not given for the piercings to heal, removal can cause the piercings to close up. Even after you remove them, don’t keep them out for too long — it’s still possible for the holes to close up if left empty. • Wash your hands before handling your ears or earrings. In the beginning, your new piercings are especially susceptible to infection, so it’s important to wash up before touching them. If you have longer hair, particularly if you use styling products, keeping your hair up and away from your ears at night can prevent bacteria from contaminating your piercings. • Regularly wash your ears and use rubbing alcohol. Dip a cotton ball or pad in rubbing alcohol and gently clean the skin around your piercings at least twice a day. • Visit a dermatologist or doctor at the first sign of infection. If you notice your ears are red, swollen or oozing, head to a health professional immediately to ensure an easy recovery.
