DIAMONDS & GEMS
We have the largest selection of sparkling diamond and gemstone necklace, rings, bracelets and earrings. Build your own custom jewelry by pairing our hand-picked loose diamonds and gems with our unique designs.
We go to the three diamond centers of the world — Antwerp, Tel Aviv and Mumbai — and hand-pick all of our loose diamonds at the diamond cutters. We choose only the prettiest diamonds within each grade, guaranteeing you get the most sparkle.
From sapphire engagement rings to ruby jewelry to sapphire jewelry, our natural stones are hand-selected by Tom Shane and then recut to his exacting specifications to maximize their color and brilliance.
A. A raw gemstone, commonly referred to as a rough gemstone, is an un-cut, un-shaped gem. In other words, it's the stone in its most natural form. A raw gem looks just as it did when it was found in the earth, which means it's a lot duller and less smooth than the gems you'll find in-store. Once a raw diamond or gem is faceted, it will be greatly reduced in size. Gem cutters will form it into particular shapes, usually based on the appearance of characteristics inside the gem, using tools that vary abrasiveness, depending on the hardness of the stone. It will then be polished until it reaches the optimum level of shine, without sacrificing its structural integrity. By the time it's finished, the raw stone will be transformed into the multi-faceted, sparkling beauties you see in Shane Co. stores.
Q. Why should I buy loose diamonds and gemstones?
A. By shopping for loose diamonds and gemstones at Shane Co., you are better able to inspect your gem in its entirety, as well as determine which shape, size and color is right for your particular style. We carry semiprecious loose gemstones, as well as ruby and sapphire stones, in addition to diamonds in a variety of shapes so that you can find the perfect stone to complement your pendant or engagement ring setting. If you're selecting sapphire stud earrings or ruby stud earrings, you can have confidence knowing that we have hand-matched the stones to ensure that you are getting gems of the same quality. If you're designing and engagement ring, our selection of diamonds and gems allows you to create custom jewelry that's special to you. Maybe you've decided to go with a sapphire engagement ring rather than the traditional diamond center stone - Shane Co. has a variety of colors to choose from including white, blue and pink sapphires, all of the highest quality, with settings that work beautifully with the stone of your choice. In additon, our wide selection of colorful gemstones makes it easy for you to stay within your budget. Rather than choosing a pre-mounted ring or pendant, you can pick out a stone that has the sparkle and price you're looking for.
Q. What makes Shane Co. diamond and gemstone jewelry special?
A. Shane Co. is a direct importer, which means that we buy our stones directly from the stone cutters. We have long-standing relationships with our cutters and unrivaled buying power in the industry, so they offer us first pick of their newly cut stones. We look beyond the 4 Cs of diamonds and hand-pick all of our gems for their specific sparkle and beauty. We have such rigid quality standards that only 1 out of every 10 diamonds we’re shown makes its way into Shane Co. stores or ShaneCo.com. Our stones are cut by master stone cutters to maximize their beauty, before being matched by hand for all of our jewelry pieces. You’ll find that our diamond stud earrings, ruby and sapphire jewelry, engagement ring settings and more are all carefully crafted by highly experienced jewelers. All of our stones are natural, not lab-created, so you’re not just getting something to wear – you’re getting a meaningful piece of jewelry with true lasting value. We’re a family owned and operated business that’s dedicated to creating diamond, sapphire, ruby and gemstone jewelry that will be cherished for generations.
Q. Does Shane Co. have my birthstone?
A. Shane Co. carries a large selection of jewelry with birthstones. We don’t carry certain stones that don’t meet our standards for durability because we want to make sure your jewelry will be enjoyed for a lifetime. Therefore, our selection of gemstones by month includes the types that rate highly on the Mohs Scale of Hardness. However, we do carry comparable colors to match your month’s particular gem. Some of the stones we carry include February’s birthstone, amethyst; March’s birthstone, aquamarine; November’s birthstone, topaz; and many more. You can find corresponding birthstones and gemstone colors on Shaneco.com’s Birthday Gifts page.
Q. Are gems valuable?
A. Because they were naturally created over many thousands of years within the earth, all precious and semi-precious stones have value, both monetarily and sentimentally. Diamonds are considered the most valuable of precious stones, though all quality gems carry esteem. For this reason, they are generally considered a good investment, as they are likely to hold their value over time. Particularly in recent years, gems have been used for more than just fashion, celebrated for their rarity and lauded for their particular mythology and spiritual benefits. Amethyst, for example, is associated with healing emotional issues, calming the mind, enhancing cognitive perception, and encouraging clear headedness. Topaz is valued for its abilities to increase concentration and provide inner peace. Because of their beauty and uniqueness, diamonds, sapphire and ruby jewelry and other gems are the perfect way to show someone how much they mean to you.
Q. How are pearls made?
A. Pearls are the only gem that is created by a living organism, making them particularly special to wearers. In the wild, pearls are formed within oysters or mollusks, with only about 20 species out of 8,000 capable of producing these natural gems. An outside element, such as a grain of sand, will slip between the shells of the mollusk. The mollusk will then cover the intruder with layers of nacre, the mineral substance that the shell is made of, until it becomes a fully-formed pearl. Nearly all of the pearls available on the market today are cultured at pearl farms, as natural pearls are extremely rare and often come out irregularly shaped and not fit for jewelry. To create cultured pearls, a small pearl bead or a piece of mantle tissue or both – depending on the type of mollusk – is inserted into the mollusks which stimulates the secretion of nacre. You may be asking yourself, “How much are pearls worth?” The answer depends on the quality, size, and rarity of the pearl. It’s important to purchase your pearl jewelry from an experienced jeweler like Shane Co. We sell only pearls in their natural colors, never dyed. The pearls in each piece of our jewelry are carefully matched by hand for size, color and shape. We also put knots between the pearls in our pearl strands. This prevents the pearls from rubbing together and damaging the nacre. It also ensures that if a strand should break, you will not lose a large number of pearls.
Q. What kind of pearls does Shane Co. carry?
A. Shane Co. carries Akoya pearls, freshwater pearls, Tahitian pearls, and South Sea pearls, all of which are used to create our beautiful selection of pearl earrings, pearl necklaces and more. Often, you’ll find diamonds and pearls or other gems together in our pieces to create a beautiful, feminine look that’s both elegant and timeless. You’ll also notice that different types of pearls vary in color, size and shape. Akoya pearls are considered the “classic,” appearing in round or oval shapes and usually measuring between 5 and 8mm with colors ranging from pink-white to silvery blue. Our freshwater pearls come in a variety of different styles and shapes ranging from round and oval to button and even drop or baroque. In color, they can vary from pure white to rosy violet. Tahitian pearls generally appear more in drop shapes than round and are a little bigger, with sizes ranging from 8 to 14mm or even larger. Their color can be black, silver, dark or light grey or “peacock green” which appears as a stunning greenish black. Finally, the South Sea pearl is the rarest pearl, with sizes ranging from 9 to 20mm. We offer jewelry with South Sea pearls in white or a golden color similar to champagne.
