The Most Popular Hairstyle in Every State

Hairstyles have come a long way since the days of beehive updos and monstrous perms. Cans of hairspray are no longer quite as essential to a morning routine as they once were, and luckily for the men, neither are fistfuls of gel. While it’s easy to laugh at the hairstyles in our parents’ old yearbook photos (an indisputably fun way to pass the time), they may have been on to something — many of the popular hairstyles of generations past are making a swift comeback.

Outdated hairstyles are once again stepping onto the scene. Celebrities are rocking mullets, and hairstylists everywhere are shown Farrah Fawcett-like curtain bangs as inspiration for their clients’ haircuts. While millennials and Gen Z are certainly responsible for reviving these older hairstyles, younger generations have hairstyles of their own, made viral by platforms like Instagram and TikTok. Pastel hair dye and futuristic bubble braids live in harmony with updated ’70s-era shags — much to the confusion of Gen X and baby boomers.

At Shane Co., we know the importance of aesthetics. With such a wide range of popular hairstyles in 2021, both old and new, we decided to take a closer look at which hairstyles Americans are searching for, and where, using Google Trends search volume.

Read on to find out which hairstyle is Googled most in your state!

The Most Popular Feminine Hairstyle in Every U.S. State

First, we decided to take a look at the top-searched feminine hairstyle in every state over the past 12 months using Google Trends. From “money pieces” in Arizona to dreadlocks in Tennessee, each state has its own preferences when it comes to hairstyles. Popular searches vary quite a bit from coast to coast. Notably, the curtain bangs trend spans the map from California to Illinois to Connecticut.

The Most Popular Masculine Hairstyle in Every U.S. State

Next, we used the same methodology to find the top-searched masculine hairstyle in every state. As with the feminine hairstyles, the most popular masculine hairstyles are not unique to one region of the country. These styles span from crew cuts in Alaska to curly undercuts in Florida to man bangs in Oregon! Which hairstyle is the most searched in your state?

The Most Popular Hairstyles Overall

Balayage takes the cake as the most Googled feminine hairstyle overall, with a total of six states. And it’s no wonder why — the low-maintenance, natural-looking glam is perfect for women who want to spice up their natural color, without forking up hundreds of dollars every few months for touch-ups.

Following closely behind is curtain bangs, top-searched in five states. This freshly revived hairstyle is straight out of the ’70s and is now dominating salons in 2021. Ombre is the next top-searched hairstyle, winning a total of four states. Ombre is similar to balayage in that it’s a low-maintenance coloring technique.

The undercut is no underdog. As the top-searched masculine hairstyle in six states, the undercut is the hairstyle of the moment, made popular by Cillian Murphy in “Peaky Blinders” and Brad Pitt in the film “Fury.”

Interestingly, the mullet is the second top-searched masculine hairstyle nationwide. Over a year and a half into the pandemic, it’s safe to say Zoom culture has given a whole new meaning to “business in the front, party in the back.” We’re all about professional appearances with an unexpected twist. Buzz cuts, French crops, curly undercuts, and afro fades all tie for the third top-searched styles, each earning the top spot in three states.
