It’s a tale as old as time, chocolate paired with any type of food. Who doesn’t like chocolate, right? Well, we know there are a few people who don’t like the sweet treat but don’t worry, we won’t hold that against you. Chocolate goes with just about anything. Chocolate and peanut butter? The perfect combination. Chocolate and fruit? Delicious. But is there anything you wouldn’t pair with chocolate?

We did some digging and sought to find the most popular chocolate-covered treat in every U.S. state!

Methodology

Using a list of 28 popular chocolate-covered treats, we explored Google search trends over the last five years for all 50 states plus the District of Columbia. We determined clear winners for the most popular chocolate-covered treat in each state, the most popular chocolate-covered treat overall, and how many states searched for that chocolate-covered treat the most.

The Most Popular Chocolate-Covered Treat in Every U.S. State

With just a quick glance at this map, you’ll see most states choose your typical chocolate-coated treats such as fruit, almonds, pretzels, and coffee beans, but there are a few more unusual items as well.

Hawaii’s most popular chocolate-covered treat is the macadamia nut. A less well-known nut, but considering most of the world’s macadamias are grown in Hawaii, this makes sense. Potato chips are another odd choice for a snack that is perfect for on the go or road trips. The people of North Dakota enjoy covering this snack in chocolate for that perfect balance of salty and sweet.

North Carolina’s most popular chocolate-covered treat is not your typical everyday food item. Crickets are the most popular chocolate-covered treat in this Southern state. Did you know Bugfest takes place every year in the state’s capital city of Raleigh, and is the largest bug-centered event of its kind in the country?! Each year they choose a different bug to focus on, and this year it will spotlight all things arthropods!

Bacon might take the cake on the most unusual item that states like to coat in chocolate, but it has been gaining popularity on the food scene. Interested in trying out this delicacy? Check out this recipe on how to make it at home!

The Most Popular Treats in Every U.S. Region

Regionally, there are vast differences in which chocolate-covered treat is most searched. The Northeast region opts for healthier options such as bananas, cherries, and strawberries, while in the West, almonds and bananas are tied as the most popular chocolate-covered treat. Chocolate-covered almonds are a perfect on-the-go treat for that mid-afternoon pick-me-up when you are craving something sweet but don’t want anything heavy.

Pivoting to a slightly more unique treat, the Midwest and Southern regions have bacon as the most searched chocolate-covered treat. In the South, a region known for food that is oftentimes not as healthy but just as delicious, it might be fitting that bacon reigns supreme as the most searched chocolate-covered treat. While there is a debate on where exactly chocolate-covered bacon was invented, it fits perfectly into Southern-style cuisine.
