The Importance of Regular Jewelry Cleanings

Do you want your diamond to look dazzling for a party?

Are you struggling to find gift ideas for a special someone?

Have you been thinking about upgrading one of your older pieces to a newer, trendier style?

What if you could get all of these things done at one time! There are so many things competing for your attention every day, and it can be tough to find the time to take care of your jewelry the way you would like to. The daily activities of going to work, washing your hands, cleaning, cooking, gardening, or playing with your kids all make it so difficult to keep your jewelry looking at its best. These activities also conspire to wear your jewelry down, which increases the chance that problems like loose stones or wear on the metal to develop. Over time, these problems can lead to a stone falling out, broken chain or a ring cracking, which could result in hundreds or even thousands of dollars in personal costs to repair them. If you had a system in place to address these problems before they happened, however, you would have peace of mind every day knowing that your jewelry was protected.

The good news is….that’s exactly why you purchased your jewelry with Shane Co! Shane Co.’s Free Lifetime Warranty makes it simple: “We guarantee your jewelry FOR LIFE, FOR FREE.” If you are like me and thousands of other people, that is probably one of the biggest reasons you ended up investing in a piece of jewelry with Shane Co. It feels good to not have to worry about your jewelry, doesn’t it? So the question is: how does Shane Co. take care of your jewelry and maintain it for the rest of your life?

The answer to that question is our Care & Cleaning process. Whenever you purchase a piece of jewelry from Shane Co. you are given a Certified Appraisal that looks like this:

Certified appraisal

Note: Most insurance companies require an updated appraisal every 1, 2, or 3 years. This can cost several hundred dollars if you go to an independent Certified Appraiser to have them update the value of your jewelry. One of the benefits for Shane Co. customers is that we will update your Certified Appraisal for free, for life, with the current market value of your jewelry. This is one of many services we offer when you come in to have your jewelry cleaned and inspected.

You’ll notice at the bottom of the Certified Appraisal there is a section that says “Free Cleaning and Inspection Record”.

Cleaning and inspection record

We ask that you come in to a Shane Co. location every six months to have your jewelry cleaned and inspected. In addition to maintaining your warranty, this allows us to do several things for you.

Who doesn’t want their jewelry to look stunning? One of the best things about coming in to get your jewelry cleaned is that it feels like you are walking out with a new ring, necklace, bracelet, or earrings! Our thorough cleaning process involves an ultra-sonic bath in a special cleaning solution to break down the build-up of lotions and oils , on your jewelry. This is followed by a careful hand-cleaning process and finished with a high-pressure steaming to ensure maximum brilliance and sparkle.

Be very careful investing in at-home cleaning solutions!! Not all solutions are created equal and I have seen many beautiful pieces of jewelry ruined by home “cleaning kits.”

Equally important in the Care & Cleaning process is the inspection. When you bring your jewelry in to be cleaned, we do a “top-to-bottom” inspection of the piece. We are looking for anything that might lead to future concerns: uneven wear patterns, loose stones, worn prongs, thin shanks (the bottom part of the ring), loose earring backs, and more. By inspecting your jewelry consistently, we are able to be proactive instead of reactive to issues. Think of it as getting an oil change for your car; it is much easier to replace the oil every 5,000 miles than it is to replace an engine due to neglect. Likewise, it is much easier for us to maintain the beauty of your jewelry early on rather than be faced with the loss of a diamond or damage to a piece later on.

Coming in to have your jewelry cleaned and inspected has additional benefits as well.. We can update your account information in the event that you moved, or we can change your contact preferences in order to ensure that you receive a reminder every six months to have your jewelry cleaned and inspected. Additionally, we can update you on new services that may be of interest to you. For example, many couples love to come back and get their rings engraved with a personalized message. Others are interested in getting a personalized message laser-inscribed on their diamond. Still others want to make sure they are enrolled in the Shane Co. Wedding Club (a totally free service to our bridal customers, powered by, that provides planning services and member-only vendor discounts during the wedding planning process). Our technology and our services are continually expanding and evolving to meet the desires and wishes expressed by our customers, so coming in for consistent cleanings of your jewelry allows us to keep you informed of the exciting developments we are working on.

Gift Ideas

Do you have anyone you are struggling to find a gift for? Maybe a birthday, anniversary, holiday, or special occasion? While your jewelry is being cleaned and inspected, you can browse through our selection of diamonds, rubies, sapphires, pearls, men’s accessories, anniversary bands, and more to fuel your imagination! Jewelry can be both a timeless and intensely personal gift, and we would be happy to help you select the perfect gift for any occasion. However, let’s not forget one other person you may want to select a gift for: yourself! With our lifetime upgrade promise, you can trade-in your pieces of mounted diamond, ruby or sapphire Shane Co. jewelry that you may not wear as often for a new piece that reflects your current tastes. Perhaps ten years ago you were a yellow gold lover, but now you find yourself attracted to white gold styles. That’s okay! Simply trade in your ring, stud earrings or solitaire pendant and receive full value towards a new purchase. An extremely popular route taken by many of our customers is to upgrade the diamond in their engagement ring, solitaire pendant, or solitaire earrings over time. Like many couples, you may have had a more limited budget when you first got engaged or married, but now that life circumstances have changed, you want to commemorate that with a bigger diamond. Use your cleaning and inspection trips to Shane Co. to scout out a potential future upgrade, and you might find yourself with a new piece of jewelry sooner than you hoped!

Having your jewelry cleaned and inspected is an important part of being a fine jewelry owner. With love and attention, your jewelry can last for generations and provide many wonderful memories. At Shane Co., we want to do everything we can to ensure the beauty and safety of your jewelry for many years to come. If you haven’t been in in a while, come on in to a Shane Co. near you or ship your jewelry to our EStore and let us bring the sparkle and life back to your jewelry again. No appointments are necessary – just bring your jewelry, and we’ll do the rest!
