The Groomsman’s Guide: Duties and Responsibilities

Your best friend is getting married and you’ve been asked to stand by the groom on his big day, but with the title of groomsman comes a to-do list of events and items that you’re responsible for. Don’t worry, we’ll provide you with a checklist of your own to make sure you’re being the best groomsman you can be.

1. Help the groom choose the ring. While many men may shop with their soon-to-be fiancée for the perfect ring, some still like to keep it traditional and make it a surprise. Help him scope out his fiancée’s Pinterest board and give him your opinion on styles.

2. Rent the tux. Tuxedo rental costs usually fall on the groomsmen, so make sure you factor that into your budget. You want to look sharp standing next to your best man, so take the tux fittings seriously.

3. Plan and help pay for the bachelor party. While most of this falls on the shoulders of the best man, it is your job to offer ideas and chip in some cash when necessary.

4. Attend pre-wedding events. We know life happens, but make sure to put the effort into attending all events, whether that is an engagement party or the rehearsal dinner. The groom chose you for a reason.

5. Buy a wedding gift. Proper wedding etiquette calls for the wedding party to still give gifts to the bride and groom. Don’t let this wait until the last minute. Check out the couple’s registry before everything is purchased.

6. Mix and mingle. The bride and groom don’t always arrive on time to the wedding reception. It’s your job to entertain the guests and make sure everything is going smoothly until the newlyweds make their grand entrance.
