Wedding

Congratulations, You’re a Bridesmaid! Here’s What You Can Expect

You’ve been asked to be a part of her big day and to stand beside her while she marries the love of her life. With that being said, there are a few things that you’ve automatically signed up for by saying “yes.”

To be a bridesmaid means having duties and responsibilities that take place throughout the bride’s journey. From engagement parties to bridal showers, you have signed your name on the dotted line to be the bride’s go-to girl. Here’s what to expect in the months leading up to the wedding.

1. Be there for the bride. Whether this means lending a hand during planning or simply listening to a much-needed venting session, this is the most important responsibility to carry out during the whole wedding process.

2. Be there for the maid of honor. While the MOH takes the brunt of the event planning and responsibilities, it’s expected for you to check in from time to time to see what help she may need.

3. Buy a bridesmaid dress. And don’t complain about it. While some brides might offer to cover the cost of the dress, it’s not expected nor is it common.

4. Help plan and pay for the bridal shower and bachelorette party. While most of this falls on the MOH, it’s your job to offer ideas and chip in cash for these two big events.

5. Attend any prewedding events. Whether it’s an engagement party or the bachelorette party, it’s also your job to be there. Life happens, but make sure you put the effort into attending as many events as you can.

6. Buy a wedding AND shower gift. It’s proper wedding etiquette to buy the couple both a wedding and shower gift. Amidst all of the paying and planning, don’t let this fall off your radar.

7. Have an emergency kit for the big day. It’s best to be prepared. The wedding party is responsible for having save-the-day items such as stain remover, a sewing kit and Advil — just in case.

8. Dance like no one is watching at the reception. It’s your job to get the party started at the reception. Grab your girls and head out to the dance floor. As vodka once said, “Believe me, you can dance.”
