Every State’s Favorite Self-Help Book

As we near the end of 2023, New Year’s resolutions might be a distant memory for some of us. But no matter what month it is, it’s never too late to pick up where you left off. One of the best ways to stay motivated and get back on track is to dive into a self-help book crafted to inspire and rejuvenate your mindset.

At Shane Co., we know self-care always comes first. That’s why we were curious: which self-help books are capturing the attention of Americans this year? We turned to Google Trends to uncover the most searched titles across different states and regions. Whether it’s about decluttering, finding inner peace, or just not sweating the small stuff, there’s a book out there resonating with people.

So, if you’re looking for a mid-year boost or just curious about popular picks, let’s uncover the most sought-after self-help reads of 2023!

The Most Popular Self-Help Book in Every U.S. State

Across cities and countrysides, people are turning to self-help books for answers. Let’s explore the top titles that have made a mark nationwide.

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life” by Mark Manson stands out as the dominant choice, with readers from 11 states wholly embracing its message. Manson’s raw and straightforward approach challenges the traditional self-help narrative. Instead of preaching constant positivity, he champions the acceptance of life’s limitations and hurdles. This refreshing perspective has struck a chord with readers from diverse states such as the bustling hubs of New York and Illinois, to the tranquil terrains of Montana and Wyoming.

Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking by Susan Cain finds its niche in seven states. Cain’s introspective exploration into the world of introverts provides a deep understanding of their strengths and challenges in an extroverted world. States like Alaska, with its vast and quiet landscapes, and Pennsylvania, with its mix of urban and rural communities, have found a connection with Cain’s insights into the power of introspection and reflection.

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo has inspired readers in three states to declutter and rejuvenate their living spaces. Kondo’s unique KonMari method, which emphasizes joy and mindfulness in organizing, has resonated with residents of Alabama, Arkansas, and Oklahoma, encouraging them to find happiness in simplicity and order.

A Gentle Reminder by Bianca Sparacino touches the hearts of readers in California, Connecticut, and Texas. Sparacino’s poetic prose offers comfort, healing, and encouragement, reminding everyone of their worth and potential. Whether amidst the Southern vibes of Texas or the serene coastlines of Connecticut, Sparacino’s words serve as a gentle nudge toward self-love and understanding.

Over in the Aloha State, Hawaii’s top pick is none other than “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki. It’s no surprise that this classic on financial literacy and personal growth resonates deeply with Hawaiians, given that Kiyosaki himself hails from the islands. The book’s profound lessons on wealth, investment, and financial independence, combined with Kiyosaki’s local roots, make it a cherished guide for many seeking prosperity and a richer understanding of money’s role in their lives.

When it comes to the most sought-after authors, Mark Manson claims the top spot, thanks to the sweeping success of his standout book. However, Malcolm Gladwell showcases his literary might with not one, but two books gracing our map — “Outliers” and “Talking to Strangers.” This feat cements Gladwell’s position as the third most popular author overall, just behind Susan Cain.
