Analyzing the Perfect Mimosa Around the U.S.

Nothing screams a perfect start to your morning like breakfast with mimosas and a debrief of the day before with friends. Typically made with champagne and orange juice, mimosas are one of the simplest drinks that are equal parts bubbly and refreshing — and dangerously keep us coming back for more. This rang true for one woman, whose “this is me after one mimosa” TikTok challenge ended with her front row of teeth getting knocked out. Let’s just hope she didn’t need to be camera-ready for any special occasion.

With all of the buzz surrounding mimosas (not to mention the 1.1B views garnered on TikTok under #mimosa), Shane Co. was excited to dig a little deeper into Americans’ mimosa preferences, their drinking habits, and how they differ across the U.S. map.

Whether you and your bridesmaids are sipping mimosas to calm pre-wedding nerves or celebrating your future nuptials at a bridal shower, there are so many mimosa flavors to mix up, which means the adventures are never-ending. Keep reading to discover what mayhem mimosas bring and which states can hold their mimosas the best!

What Would People Give for the Perfect Mimosa?

Coffee, chocolate, and Netflix are just a few of the joys in life that some people are unwilling to give up, and now you can add mimosas to that list! Of those surveyed, we found that almost a quarter (24%) said they could go longer without drinking coffee than they could without drinking mimosas. Nothing screams Sunday Funday like a delicious strawberry mango mimosa or the classic OJ-and-champagne kind!

21% of women surveyed make mimosas at home, and 50% of women said they make their mimosas at home stronger than the ones they get in restaurants or bars. This isn’t surprising, as one of the internet’s latest trends includes elaborate mimosa bars at bridal showers where guests can choose between mimosa flavors like orange, cranberry, peach, and pineapple juice, and add different types of fruit and bubbly to the mix.

Mimosas are all fun and games until that liquid courage sets in. 14% of women and 12% of men surveyed have sent a text they normally wouldn’t send after drinking mimosas. From dancing on tables to calling an old flame — mimosas can bring out the real you.

And as for the ideal champagne-to-juice ratio? While some say the more alcohol the better, according to the average American, close to 50/50 is perfect. More precisely, 46.3% champagne and 53.7% orange juice is the ideal recipe.

The Biggest Mimosa Lightweights

When it comes to getting mimosa drunk, certain states know how to hold their champagne and OJ better than others. Those in Massachusetts are no secret to feeling the buzz, as 92.00% of respondents get tipsy from three or fewer mimosas in one sitting

Plus, it’s easy to do at places like The Friendly Toast, which features a brunch and bar menu (with locations in Boston and Burlington, MA). Order a mimosa flight or their signature Market Square Mimosa — made with orange liqueur, OJ, and bubbles!

Connecticut ranks second on the list of U.S. states that get tipsiest the fastest off of three mimosas or less, with 88.24% of participants falling victim to the mimosa buzz. The Red Rock Tavern in Hartford features mimosa pitchers on Saturday and bottomless mimosas on Sunday, and they pair perfectly with their Fruity Pebble pancakes — because you can’t drink on an empty stomach.

The Evergreen State, a.k.a. Washington, placed third with 84.31% of participants feeling tipsy after only three mimosas or less. Stop in for weekend brunch at Meet the Moon in Seattle. They serve mimosa pitchers made with sparkling wine and orange, pineapple, or grapefruit juice, plus brunch items like biscuits and gravy or cinnamon roll French toast — yum!

New Hampshire places fourth with 80.85% of respondents claiming they can feel the effects of their mimosas after a few drinks, while Indiana, Nebraska, and Rhode Island tie for fifth with 80.00% of respondents feeling unsteady after three mimosas or less!

For Mimosas or For Money?

While some people are skipping drinks and restaurant takeout because of inflation, others are less keen on giving up their mimosas! 19.72% of those surveyed from South Carolina are willing to pay a President Grant and some change ($50, to be exact) in exchange for bottomless mimosas at brunch

The Southern Culture Kitchen and Bar, located in Greenville, features Man-Mosas, which is a choice of any draft, bottled, or canned beer served with orange juice.

Those from Massachusetts wouldn’t trade their breakfast with mimosas for anything, as 17.54% of participants would pay $50 or more for endless mimosas. According to the drinks business, Massachusetts is seventh on the list of states that drink the most in the U.S., which sheds light as to why they take their mimosa game so seriously.

Alabamians are also partying it up, as 14.17% of respondents surveyed claimed they would spend more than $50 for bottomless mimosas. The Black Market Bar and Grill, located in Birmingham, has given residents an unquenching thirst for mimosas, as the restaurant serves up Southern Mimosas made with Hi-life and OJ, and brunch staples like waffle fried chicken bites served with maple syrup.

Kentucky places fourth, with 11.31% of respondents on board with paying more than $50 for bottomless mimosas, while Virginia follows a hair behind them at 11.09%.

Jumping down to number 10 on our list is Georgia, where 9.77% of those surveyed would pay over $50 for bottomless mimosas. Perhaps this could be due to some places in the state like Savannah, which don’t have any open container laws.

Closing Thoughts

The tangy and sweet taste of mimosas has captured the nation. While old fashioneds and gin martinis are staples at weddings, mimosa bars are inching their way toward the spotlight. Plus, they are the perfect drink for giving a toast and showering your loved one with praise.

Methodology

To discover which states were all-in on mimosas, we ran a survey in September of 2022 and received feedback from 3,000 anonymous respondents about their mimosa preferences. We had a minimum of 50 respondents from every U.S. state, outside of Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, and Wyoming, which were omitted due to population constraints.
