The Most Popular Types of Sushi Rolls in Each State

Women love diamonds, but sushi is a girl’s best friend. Plus, there is nothing more attractive than a man willing to buy you your favorite types of sushi rolls. Here at Shane Co., we wanted to help you break up the humdrum of date night by showcasing the most popular sushi rolls in your state. With so many options like volcano rolls or bagel rolls, impress your date with your killer chopstick moves and prepare for an epic meal out with the best sushi rolls in your state.

Methodology

We used sources like Ranker and Mashed to compile a list of the 27 most popular sushi rolls. Next, we used Google Trends to cross-analyze the search interest of each roll across the U.S. from the past five years (May 2017 to May 2022).

The Most Popular Sushi Roll in Every U.S. State

From sea to shining sea, the fish in the ocean don’t stand a chance when it comes to America’s love of sushi. Texas had the highest search volume for the avocado roll, which — you guessed it — contains avocado, seaweed, and rice. Free from fish, it’s a great option for those who are allergic to seafood but still want to have their sushi and eat it too.

Mississippi ranks highest for the dynamite roll, made from prawns, avocado, cucumber, and nori (dried seaweed). This roll is wrapped with rice on the outside and topped with tobiko, which translates to fish roe (a.k.a. fish eggs).

The spider roll is the most popular sushi roll in New Jersey and features a soft-shell crab as the star of the dish. It’s accompanied perfectly by avocado, cucumber, spicy mayo, rice, and nori. Consider visiting Tsubaki in East Windsor, New Jersey, for a delicious spider roll topped with tobiko.

The Most Popular Sushi Roll Overall

Just as you stole your lover’s heart, so too did one type of sushi roll capture the nation. It’s no surprise that the California roll garnered the most attention in 21 states. It’s a safe bet that if you live in California (shocker), North Dakota, Alaska, or Maine, your date will enjoy the cucumber, crab, and avocado found in most California rolls. We can’t think of a more romantic date idea than ordering some sushi and watching the northern lights with your love.

The veggie roll came in second and is one of the best types of sushi rolls in six states. Westerners and Midwesterners alike must enjoy having their veggies wrapped in rice and dipped in soy sauce since their favorite roll is a veggie roll. These delicious rolls are great for vegetarians or anyone else limiting their fish intake, as they are made with purple cabbage, avocado, carrots, and cucumber, and wrapped traditionally with nori and rice.

Massachusetts, New York, and Ohio all rated high for the sweet potato roll. This filling roll contains classic ingredients like roasted sweet potatoes, other vegetables, nori, and rice. Some sweet potato rolls are even topped with flaxseed or spicy tahini dressing. If you’re looking for a place to take that special someone, visit New York’s Sushi Lab for a 13-course tasting menu for $125 per person, or try their matcha crunch roll (made with spicy baked crab, shrimp tempura, avocado, and matcha-covered rice pearls) with a glass of house sake.

Rainbow roll — the cousin to the California roll — tied for third and is made with a variety of fish, cucumber, avocado, and crab stick (imitation crab). Rainbow rolls use raw fish like salmon, tuna, and yellowtail, and are topped with colorful fish eggs, which gives it the appearance of a bright rainbow.

Closing Thoughts

It’s hard enough to come up with creative date night ideas, which is why we wanted to bring you the best types of sushi rolls in every state. Whether you and your date eat your sushi in a Japanese restaurant, pack it up for a picnic at the park, or enjoy it while binge-watching the newest season of “Bachelor in Paradise,” you simply can’t go wrong.

Avoid the wasabi and instead spice up your date with ruby earrings from our stunning collection, or purchase a beautiful anniversary gift for a memorable date night.
