What do you think of when you hear about bright skies, blue waters, romance, faithfulness and sincerity? Well, in this case, it is not a destination wedding. I’m talking about one of the most beautiful and mystic gems in the world, which has captivated people since ancient history: the sapphire!
History of Sapphires
The word sapphire comes from the Latin word “sapphirus,” meaning “blue.” The ancient Persians believed Earth rested on a giant sapphire, and its reflection is what made the sky blue. Over time, the gift of a sapphire came to symbolize trust and loyalty, and it has been considered a “royal gem.” If you are lucky enough to have a birthday in September, sapphire is your birthstone! It is also the traditional gift for the 45th wedding anniversary.
Famous Sapphires
The Star of India is the largest and most famous star sapphire in the world, weighing 563.35 carats. Financer J.P. Morgan presented the sapphire to the American Museum of Natural History in 1900.
The Rockefeller Sapphire is 62.02 carats. It was purchased in 1934 from an Indian maharajah whose period of rule lasted from 1911 to 1948, and it acquired its name from John D. Rockefeller, Jr.
