But have you ever wondered about the science behind this beloved ritual?

Here, we’ll explore the statistics that unravel the secrets behind the perfect happy hour experience, according to happy hour enjoyers and enthusiasts across the U.S. Read on to learn what goes into creating the perfect happy hour experience.

Happy Hours Across the U.S.

In the United States of Happy Hours, a few states stand out by embracing a non-alcoholic alternative. Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Ohio, and Utah are the pioneers in opting for refreshing non-alcoholic beverages during their happy hour escapades.

Most states lean toward an early evening start for their happy hours, with two notable exceptions: Massachusetts and New York march to the beat of their own drum, declaring 6:00pm as the ideal start time. Meanwhile, most states favor the more traditional hours of 4:00pm or 5:00pm to kick off the festivities.

Connecticut takes the crown for stretching the enjoyment to its fullest during happy hours. The Nutmeg State boasts an ideal happy hour duration of 90 minutes, providing ample time for patrons to savor their libations and indulge in lively conversations.

On the other end of the spectrum, West Virginia embraces brevity, with happy hours lasting a mere 66 minutes. The national average, for comparison, stands at 78.3 minutes.

Residents in the Hawkeye State emerge as the frontrunners for truly memorable happy hour experiences — happy hour enthusiasts in Iowa have proven their willingness to go the extra mile, with an average spending of $51.24 per event.

South Carolina, Oklahoma, New York, and Virginia follow closely behind as they showcase their dedication to enjoying quality time with a little extra investment, all upwards of $44.00 spent at the average happy hour.

The Happy Hour Budget in Every State

While fifty-something dollars a happy hour doesn’t seem like much after one outing, the cost adds up over time! Overall, the average American spends $424.05 each year if they go to one happy hour per month, and $1,837.75 each year if they go to one happy hour per week. That’s 4.37% of the average American’s paycheck!

Assuming they attend one happy hour each month, Iowa, South Carolina, Oklahoma, New York, and Virginia round out the top five highest annual spenders at a post-work kickback. Each of these states spends over $500 each year!

Arkansas, Indiana, Illinois, New Mexico, and North Carolina are much more conservative when it comes to their spending habits: They spend the least amount of money each year, with Arkansas averaging just over $312.

If we assume residents are going to happy hour weekly, these numbers skyrocket, with 11 states spending over $2,000 on happy hour annually. Iowa breaks the bank at $2,664.43.

Happy hour affects some states’ wallets more than others: In South Carolina, 6.93% of their hard-earned paycheck goes back into drinking with their coworkers, while Massachusetts spends just 2.99% of their paycheck.
