How to Style and Incorporate Flowers into Your Wardrobe

Two words: flower power. While it may be 2023, the 1960s and 1970s are still relevant when it comes to floral fashion inspiration. From clothes to accessories, florals have made their statement and will for years to come.

However, some may say florals aren’t for the faint of heart. Their busy patterns can make putting an outfit together a daunting task. Instead of dainty floral, it’s giving the entire garden.

And from what we’ve seen on the runway so far this year, florals are in the midst of a revival. The prints will be bold, the flowers bigger. This pattern isn’t just for the ladies, either; its ability to morph into unisex style will take this trend from vintage to modern.

Thinking of prancing through a field of floral-patterned clothes and accessories now? Us too, before you design your custom clothes with all that floral energy, stick around and we’ll guide you through how to incorporate florals into your wardrobe while showing you some of our favorite pieces along the way.

How to Mix and Match Floral Patterns

There are only a few simple rules to follow when it comes to mixing floral patterns, because when it comes to fashion it’s really up to you. With these guidelines, it will be easy to mix and match any floral pattern with another, or even flowers with stripes.

Scale is important. It’s a good rule of thumb to choose prints and patterns that are roughly the same size if you’re pairing them together. You want them to complement each other, not have one pattern overpower the other. For example, a bold floral pattern should be paired with another pattern of the same scale. If you are looking to mix a small, dainty floral pattern, maybe think of adding it to polka dots or gingham.

Know your colors. It’s also important to choose patterns that have complementing colors. There are a few color combinations to avoid, like green & orange, brown & gray, and purple & yellow. By knowing which colors complement each other on the color wheel, you can easily find patterns that use those colors and pair them with other patterns of the same or others that complement.

Mix appropriate patterns for the season. Just as each season has its own style of clothing, patterns also follow seasonal trends. Light, flowy floral patterns are perfect for spring and summer while bolder, darker floral prints are perfect for fall and winter.

How to Add a Pop of Floral to an Outfit

Layers. Layering is the easiest way to add a pop of pattern to an outfit. Add a floral top underneath a blazer, or pair a neutral sweater with a floral skirt.

Neutral colors are your friend. Neutral colors are just that — neutralizers. Use colors like white, black, beige, and gray to offset your colorful prints and patterns. It calms the eye while still allowing you to incorporate bolder colors into your outfit.

Accessorize with Flowers

Accessories can be the easiest way to incorporate patterns of any print. It’s also a great way to try out a pattern that you don’t normally wear to see if it’s something you like before you invest in a larger piece.

Handbags. Floral patterned handbags are a great way to dabble in this trendy print. From bags with a subtle print to purses in the shape of an actual flower, it’s easy to add this piece to your wardrobe to spice up your look.

Jewelry. Now this is something we know a thing or two about. Jewelry is a fun way to add flair to your wardrobe, and the possibilities are endless. Floral jewelry is having its moment. From earrings to cocktail rings, jewelry is not only fun to collect but is an investment. At Shane Co., each piece we sell is backed by our Free Lifetime Warranty, turning our classic pieces into modern heirlooms.

Scarves. Patterned silk scarves have been a fashion staple since pre-WWII, and their bold prints provided much-needed positivity after the war, increasing their popularity. Their beautiful patterns still adorn the necks and heads of many. Finding silk scarves in colorful floral patterns is a great way to add a pop of pattern to your outfit.

Hair accessories. Just like scarves, headbands and clips are another great way to add a small but noticeable floral detail.

Wearing Florals in Fall & Winter

Florals are known to be spring and summer’s go-to pattern, but what about the rest of the year? We think flowers should have a spot in your wardrobe year-round.

Consider the color palette. By choosing appropriate colors for the current season, you can bring flowers into your wardrobe at any time of the year. For winter, we suggest pairing darker floral patterns with seasonal neutrals, like navy, maroon, or brown. For fall, that still holds true but feel free to choose lighter colors as you transition into winter.

Be bold. The scale of the pattern also affects the season in which it’s appropriate to wear. Large, bold prints are great for fall and winter months.

Accessorize. It’s also easier to incorporate small pops of floral into your fall and winter outfits with accessories. Add a bag covered in sunflowers to your fall outfit, or poinsettia earrings in winter.
