Warm weather is great, but when it starts to cool off, trading an iced coffee for a warm latte can be the breath of fresh air your routine needs. Later months are accompanied by apple ciders, pumpkin spice, chai lattes, and more. With many popular fall beverages to choose from, it can be hard to pick one. That’s why we’ll turn to the data in order to determine the top-searched fall beverage in every U.S. state.

Methodology

From the fan-favorite pumpkin spice latte to autumnal apple cider mimosas, there’s a lot to get excited over as the weather begins to cool down. To determine everyone’s favorite fall drinks for this year, we used Google Trends to identify the most searched-for beverage in each state. We gathered 14 search terms from sources including Insanely Good and Taste of Home, and used search term data between August 2021 and August 2022 to determine each state’s favorite fall beverage.

The Most Popular Fall Beverage in Every State

Considering America’s ongoing obsession with all things pumpkin spice, it should be no surprise that the most popular beverage this fall is the pumpkin spice latte. The Starbucks staple won 15 states, putting it at the very top of our list of most popular fall beverages. The combination of spices, including cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, allspice, and ginger, is known to bring back cozy, familiar memories and inspire nostalgia nationwide as we enter the holiday season.

Tied for second place are the hot toddy and eggnog, both of which earned six states apiece. These fall drinks and other warm beverages performed exceptionally well in cooler climates, like Colorado, Alaska, and Utah. Eggnog is a Christmas classic that makes its rounds at bars, restaurants, and work holiday parties every December. It’s a rich and decadent drink specially engineered for the most wonderful time of the year. Both recipes can be prepared with alcohol, making them a great incentive for anyone reluctant to go to the dreaded family Christmas party.

Some honorable mentions included Irish coffees, hot buttered rums, and chai lattes. These less sought-after fall beverages won just one state each. Irish coffee, an iconic holiday cocktail that’s a caffeinated combination of coffee and Irish whiskey, claimed the crown of New York. Similarly, Montanans preferred hot buttered rum as their flagship alcoholic fall beverage. Chai lattes stand alongside their pumpkin spice counterparts as another coffee shop contender in Hawaii. This traditional combination of hot tea and milk is the fall flavor of choice for the tropical paradise.

Closing Thoughts

As we bid farewell to summer, we’re trading pool parties for cozy nights cuddling up on the couch to watch our holiday flicks, and exchanging iced lemonades and other summertime staples for pumpkin spice lattes and warm apple ciders. Cinnamon-infused fall favorites provide you with a much-needed change of pace as we enter the holiday season, but with so many drinks to pick from, it can be hard to choose. Hopefully, we were able to give you a couple of good ideas to choose from next time you can’t decide on what to order at your favorite local coffee shop.
