7 Ways to Drop a Hint about Getting Engaged

March 20 is National Proposal Day! A day where we celebrate love of every kind — and offer a few tips to help your partner get the message that you’re totally ready for a ring.

1. Leave him clues

A surefire way to let them know what you’re thinking about without being too obvious is to plant some clues for your honey. Oh, you accidentally left your laptop open on some pretty ring photos? How forgetful of you!

2. Use media to your advantage

Putting on shows like “Say Yes to the Dress” or pointing out recently married or engaged friends on social media is a great way to start a conversation. Mention how gorgeous your bestie’s new ring is, or how much you love the look of a mermaid gown. Even talking about what you don’t like is a way to get started — if you see an extravagant proposal on TV that’s very un-you, try saying something like, “I’d be so embarrassed if someone popped the question to me in public like that!”

3. Enlist your friends

Chances are, you’ve already talked to your friends about your desires to get engaged. Luckily, they can be very helpful in nudging your sweetie in the right direction. Ask them to drop hints, or if they’re already coupled up, talk about how amazing being engaged/married has been for them.

4. Be honest

Look — if you truly feel ready to get engaged, you should also feel ready to talk to your honey about it. While giving an ultimatum is never a good idea, being honest about your feelings and wondering where your relationship is headed is totally normal. Keep the lines of communication open and let your partner know what’s on your mind.

5. Go shopping

Looking for a new piece of jewelry? Ask your sweetie to shop online with you. This way, you can “casually” point out rings you like without it seeming like a big deal. If you’ve been together for a while, they’re most likely curious about your tastes anyway!

6. Focus on the future

If you’re considering getting engaged, talking about your vision of the future is something you should already be doing with your partner. Discussing things like where you want to live, how many kids you want, and what your forever home would look like is the perfect way to get your future together on their mind without coming off as too pushy.

7. Do it yourself

It’s 2020, and there are definitely no rules when it comes to engagements! If you know your relationship is ready for the next step, maybe it’s time to take the proposal into your own hands.
