What Are Lab-Grown Diamonds? Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Real?

Unlike moissanite or cubic zirconia, a lab-grown diamond is a real diamond. Chemically speaking, lab-grown diamonds are identical to natural diamonds. To the naked eye they look exactly the same. The fact of the matter is, lab-grown diamonds and natural diamonds are both diamonds.

How Are Lab-Grown
Diamonds Made?

Lab-grown diamonds are made over a matter of weeks using advanced technology perfected to an art. See the processes for two types of lab-grown diamonds below:

Illustration of a carbon-rich gas cloud

CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) Diamonds

  • Lab-grown diamonds start with a thin slice of diamond seed.
  • This seed is placed in a sealed chamber and heated to a high temp.
  • The chamber is then filled with carbon-rich gasses.
  • A diamond is born when carbon merges with the diamond seed.
  • The rough diamond is then cut to exacting standards.
  • The end result is a diamond with the same chemical makeup as a natural diamond

HPHT (High Pressure, High Temperature) Diamonds

  • A diamond seed is placed in a specialized press.
  • The growth chamber of the press is heated to 1300-1600 °C, and the pressure applied is above 870,000 pounds per square inch.
  • Molten metal dissolves the carbon source.
  • Carbon atoms trigger the growth of a small diamond seed crystal.
  • A lab-grown diamond is cultivated and then cut to meet exacting standards.
  • The final result is a diamond with the same chemical composition as a natural diamond.

Why Are Shane Co. Lab-Grown Diamonds Better?

When it comes to lab-grown diamonds, we take the same approach we do for all our diamonds. We work with the best diamond vendors — people who’ve perfected the art and science of creating gorgeous diamonds in a lab — then hand-select only the best stones, and have them cut by the best diamond cutters.

  • Because of our deep network and longstanding relationships with natural diamond suppliers, we were able to meet with the best producers in the lab-grown diamond business. These producers are making diamonds with the same quality we’re known for, that live up to our superior standards.

  • We offer both CVD with HPHT enhancement and HPHT diamonds. Shane Co. selects the most beautiful and vibrant of both CVD and HPHT Lab-Grown Diamonds in the market with the most sparkle. We pick each diamond for every piece of jewelry to ensure the highest quality. Our vendors are using the newest, best-in-class technology that they’ve perfected over decades.

  • Our vendors first cherry-pick the best lab-grown diamonds for us, and then we personally hand-select the ones we want to buy from them. We use the best, most experienced stone cutters, families we’ve been working with for generations. Their years of experience cutting natural diamonds now carries over into cutting lab-grown diamonds to the same exacting standards.

Transparency and Integrity

At Shane Co., we go above and beyond to differentiate our lab-grown diamonds from our natural diamonds. Our lab-grown diamonds are kept separate from our natural diamonds from when they’re created by the vendor up until they’re brought home by the customer. As an added measure, our lab-grown diamonds are certified by a third-party institute and inscribed with “Shane Co. Lab-Grown.”

How Can You Tell the Difference Between Natural and Lab-Grown Diamonds?

To the naked eye, it’s impossible to distinguish lab-grown diamonds from natural diamonds. A trained gemologist can determine the difference using sophisticated equipment. At Shane Co. we inscribe “Shane Co. Lab-Grown” on every lab-grown diamond, which can be viewed with a loupe and ensures they’ll never be confused for natural diamonds.

Lab-Grown Diamond Certification

Our lab-grown diamonds are certified by an accredited independent gemological institute.

In addition to the diamond’s carat weight and measurements, a diamond certificate includes grades for the diamond’s cut, clarity, and color.
