Understanding Ring Sizes

Understanding Ring Sizes
Ring sizes vary internationally. The United States and Canada follow a numerical scale with half and quarter sizes, while some other countries follow an alphabetical scale. No matter the size metric, all jewelers measure from the side edge of the ring or the center of the ring's inside. Keep in mind the band material width can affect ring size, and stacking bands can also lead to a larger ring size. The more material there is, the tighter the ring is going to fit.

Tips for Finding Your Ring Size

Tips for Finding Your Ring Size
    • Time of day can affect your ring size. It’s usually best to measure in the morning.
    • Did you know your dominant hand is usually larger? Ring size varies from right to left hand, so make sure you measure the finger you plan to wear the ring on, whether that’s your ring finger or pinky finger.
    • Wider bands have a tighter fit, and you might want to size up.
    • Did you know your knuckle is bigger than the rest of your finger? Take knuckle size into account, making sure you choose a size that can get over it, but isn’t too loose.
    • Fingers shrink when cold and expand when hot based on your activity or the season.
    • Some rings can’t be resized because of the metal type or style.

How to Measure Your Partner's Ring Size (Without Telling Them)

If you're buying a ring for someone else, you may not want to spoil the surprise by asking them their ring size. The best way to find out their size on your own is by measuring a ring they already have. Measure the interior of the ring with a measuring tape or piece of paper (see next section), using millimeters.

How to Measure Ring Size with String, Paper, and Ruler

There's a simple way to measure your ring size at home. All you need is a string or piece of paper, a ruler, and a pen. Wrap the string or paper around the base of your finger, where a ring sits. Mark the point where the ends meet. Unwrap the string or paper and measure the end to the mark with a ruler using millimeters. Divide the number by 3.14 to get the diameter of the ring. Then, compare using the chart above to find your ring size.

What Happens When I Get My Ring Resized?

If you purchase a ring and later realize that it doesn't fit perfectly, don't worry! Excluding some material types, you can usually get your ring resized. The ring resizing process involves the addition or removal of small amounts of metal. Your ring may be slightly thicker or thinner as a result, but this change is usually imperceptible.

What if I Order the Wrong Size?

At Shane Co., we offer free resizing for all materials that can be resized. This awesome benefit is part of our Free Lifetime Warranty, which also includes free maintenance and repair work, free cleaning and polishing, free inspections, and free lost stone replacement. And, if you're not happy with your ring, you can return it for a full refund within 60 days of purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions About Ring Sizing

What Affects Ring Size?

Fluctuations in weight can affect your ring size, as can weather, time of day, diet, and medication.

Is It True That Ring Size Is the Same as Shoe Size?

Nope — this one is a myth!

Is It Easier to Size a Ring Up or Down?

If you’re in between sizes, it’s best to pick the largest one. It’s easier to remove metal and resize the ring down than to add metal and size it up, though both are possible.

Why Are Rings Easier to Put on than Take Off?

When removing a ring, the pressure the ring creates can block blood from returning up the finger. Who knew?
