It\u2019s no secret that we\u2019re crazy about diamonds. But did you know we offer many other popular gems, too? From rubies and sapphires<\/a> to blue topaz, amethyst and more, there\u2019s no shortage of sparkling gems at Shane Co<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, of all the beautiful gems out there, few are more personally meaningful than those that represent one\u2019s birth month. With this in mind, we decided to dedicate a study to birthstones. We used the latest CDC<\/a> natality data to determine how many people are born each month in every state. From there, we determined the most common and rarest birthstones across the country. Additionally, we used our gemstone prices to determine which states have the most expensive birthstones of all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for each month\u2019s designated birthstone, we used the most commonly accepted combinations, as shown in the key below. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the Most Common Birthstone?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The most common birthstones across the country is peridot, August\u2019s official birthstone<\/a>. Notably, this gorgeous green gem is the top stone in California, New York, and 38 states in between.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second most common birthstone is emerald (May)<\/a> and the third most common birthstone is ruby (July<\/a>), accounting for a total of eight states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sapphire, September\u2019s<\/a> official birthstone, is the most common birthstone in New Mexico and North Dakota, while October\u2019s opal<\/a> reigns supreme in Delaware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the most expensive birthstone?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Diamonds are the most expensive birthstone. April<\/a> babies did not show up as the most popular in any of the U.S. states. The second most expensive birthstone is the ruby. At a whopping $3,000 per carat, the ruby<\/a> states (Nebraska, Vermont, and Washington) take the cake for being the states with the most expensive birthstone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a cost of $1,750 per carat, the sapphire\nstates (New Mexico and North Dakota) aren\u2019t too far behind. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fortunately for most people, at only $195 per carat, the most common birthstone in the country, peridot, won\u2019t break the bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the Second Most Common Birthstone?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The ruby is the second most common birthstone in every state, the priciest birthstone on our birthstone cost map, in a grand total of 19 states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the Least Common Birthstone?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The amethyst<\/a> is the least common or most rare birthstone in every state. Needless to say, if you were born in February, you should feel pretty special. February babies have the rarest birthstone of all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diamond (April) is the second rarest birthstone in a total of six states, while topaz (November)<\/a> is the third rarest birthstone in Montana, Wyoming, and Rhode Island. Emerald (May), sapphire (September), and pearl (June)<\/a> are the rarest birthstones in Texas, Washington, and Utah, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
