Whether you\u2019ve watched romantic movies, listened to sappy love songs or just witnessed devoted couples in everyday life, it may still surprise you to find out that entering into a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shaneco.com\/engagement-wedding\/wedding-bands\">lifetime partnership<\/a> with someone has a plethora of emotional benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. It fights depression<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Did you know that getting hitched can actually reduce your\nchance of developing depression? It\u2019s true! Married couples report less\ndepression and more support from their partners than their single counterparts,\naccording to an article in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11011503\">Journal of Health and\nSocial Behavior<\/a>. When you think about it, this makes sense \u2014 after all,\nhaving someone trustworthy to talk to about our most intense feelings and\nemotions can have a huge effect on how we deal with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. It\u2019s a mood enhancer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the common joke that marriage is stress-inducing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/health-marriage-benefits-for-men#ixzz1TDmcdmCc\">studies\nshow<\/a> that married couples produce lower levels of \u201cstress hormones\u201d like\ncortisol, resulting in less anxiety and stress and, consequently, better moods\nfor all those involved. This feel-good effect even extends to <a href=\"https:\/\/marri.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/MA-34-36-160.pdf\">children who are\nbeing raised<\/a> within married families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. It increases social support<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re worried that getting married will result in fewer\nfriendships, think again. An article in <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/psychsocgerontology\/article\/61\/2\/S71\/558402\">The\nJournals of Gerontology<\/a> discussed how older married couples actually have <em>more <\/em>of a sense of community than those\nwho are simply cohabiting. In addition, another study concluded that married\nmothers receive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/14992606\">more\nsocial support<\/a> than both single and cohabiting mothers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. It reduces rates of addiction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2011-09-benefits-marriage.html\">study<\/a> done by\nDr. Walter Forrest and Professor Carter Hay on marijuana use found that those\nwho went on to marry were \u201cless likely to have continued using the drug than\nthose who remained single.\u201d Apparently, tying the knot results in increased\nself-control, leading to a reduction of alcohol- and drug-related problems and\ndependence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. It leads to better intimacy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s no surprise that marriage promotes intimacy, but what\nyou may not be aware of is that married couples seem to have no trouble\nbringing this closeness into the bedroom. The 1992 National Health and Social\nLife survey supports the finding that married men report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1995\/04\/10\/us\/studies-find-big-benefits-in-marriage.html\">more\nsatisfaction<\/a> in their sex lives than single men. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. It makes you happier<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no doubt about it: Married couples report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.city-journal.org\/html\/why-marriage-good-you-12002.html\">being\nhappy<\/a> far more often than unmarried or divorced people do. The National\nOpinion Research Center surveyed 35,000 men and women and discovered that while\nonly 24% of single people reported they were \u201cvery happy,\u201d 40% of those married\nfelt ecstatic in their everyday lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Want to learn more about the benefits of marriage?
