With a rating of 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness, this gem is second only to diamond in durability \u2014 and just as beautiful.     What is sapphire?<\/h2>\n\n\n

    As the gemstone variety of the mineral corundum, this stone\nis created much like other natural stones: with millions of years of pressure\nbeneath the earth\u2019s surface. Trace elements like iron, titanium, chromium,\ncopper and magnesium give sapphires their unique colors. Though September is\nusually known for the rich blue variety, this superstar gem also comes in pink,\ngreen, yellow and many more colors. The only one missing is red \u2014 this color of\ncorundum is known as ruby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Some sapphires can create a starburst effect, also known as\nasterism, when you look closely. This is due to trapped inclusions that create\na six-ray star pattern in the surface of the stone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Sapphire\u2019s history<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    This special stone has been mined since at least 800 B.C.,\nprobably earlier. While we don\u2019t know the details surrounding the first\ndiscovery of sapphire, most historians guess that it was discovered in streams\nand riverbeds, where they have been washed away by erosion and many years of\nrain. With a long and storied history, this gem has always been prized for its\nrich blue hue and sparkling exterior. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Greeks wore them when they sought guidance from an oracle,\nwhile Buddhists believed the stone brought spiritual enlightenment. Hindus also\nused it during worship, and the ancient Hebrews at one time believed the Ten\nCommandments had been carved into tablets made of sapphire, though the\nreferences in the Bible may also have been referring to another blue stone \u2014\nlapis lazuli.<\/p>\n\n\n

    Because of its extreme durability, this stone is also used\nin industrial application. The Apple Watch has a screen made of sapphire glass,\nwhile other electronics and similar products make use of its hardness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Royal origins<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    This vibrant blue stone is well known for being popular\namong royals and has been the stone of choice for some famous engagement rings.\nIn 1796, French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte proposed to his wife-to-be Josephine\nwith a sapphire engagement ring. Featuring a pear-shaped sapphire and diamond\non a simple gold band, the ring later sold at auction for close to a million\ndollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Britain\u2019s Prince Charles also famously gifted Lady Diana Spencer\nwith a 12-carat sapphire engagement ring, becoming one of the most recognizable\nrings we know of. In 2010, Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton with this\nsame ring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    According to a well-known legend, Helen of Troy owned a blue\nstar sapphire that held the key to her unmatched desirability \u2014 she apparently\nhad at least 30 suitors looking to wed! It\u2019s possible that the face that\nlaunched a thousand ships actually owed it all to our favorite September\nbirthstone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \"Collection<\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

    One of the most famous (and biggest) sapphires ever\ndiscovered is the Star of India. At an incredible 563 carats, this star\nsapphire was found in Sri Lanka. After discovery, George Frederick Kunz\nprocured it for John Pierpont Morgan to be displayed at the 1900 Paris\nExposition. It was later donated to the Museum of Natural History, where it remains\n\u2014 though it was stolen in October 1964 before being returned in January of\n1965.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Rockefeller Sapphire is an internally flawless blue stone\nweighing 62.02 carats, getting its name from one-time owner John D. Rockefeller\nJr. The famous Rockefeller purchased the stone from an Indian maharajah in\n1934.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Logan Sapphire was mined in Sri Lanka during the 1900s\nbefore being purchased by Colonel M. Robert Guggenheim as a gift for his wife,\nRebecca, in 1952. She ended up donating the stone to the Smithsonian. It\nreceived the name \u201cLogan\u201d after Rebecca\u2019s new surname. This stone weighs in at\n422.99 carats and is the largest set gem in the National Gem Collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Spiritual and mystical properties<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Also known as the \u201cstone of wisdom,\u201d sapphire is believed to\nrelease mental tension, unwanted thoughts and spiritual confusion, restoring\nbalance within the body and mind. It is believed that wearers of this gem are\nbetter able to focus, maintain self-discipline and channel higher powers. The\ndeep blue color of the stone once symbolized heaven, attracting divine favor\nand wise judgement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
