It\u2019s almost August, and that means it\u2019s time for another deep dive on this month\u2019s birthstone<\/a>. Luckily for us, that means exploring the birthstone for August, beautiful green peridot \u2013 its history, meaning and all of our favorite styles to gift for August babies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the August birthstone?<\/h2>\n\n\n

\"Emerald<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

While August actually has a few stones associated with it,\nthe most popular August birthstone is peridot. This bright green gem forms deep\ninside the earth\u2019s mantle and is brought to the surface by volcanoes, sometimes\neven being found in meteorites. Unlike many other gemstones, its color comes\nfrom the composition of the mineral itself, instead of impurities. For this\nreason, its shades can vary from bright lime green to brownish-green. The\namount of iron present in the composition of the stone dictates the brightness\nof the gem\u2019s color. Peridot is sometimes referred to as the \u201cEvening Emerald\u201d\nbecause its green hue looks beautiful any time of day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a 6.5-7 rating on the Mohs scale of hardness, raw\nperidot can be prone to cracking; however, the finished gemstone is easy to\nwear and quite strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

History of peridot<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Pliny the Elder was an ancient naturalist living during the\nyears 23-79 A.D. He first recorded the existence of the stone on a small island\noff the coast of Egypt. These early gemstones came from deposits on a small\nvolcanic island in the red sea called Topazios. For this reason, early peridot\nwas sometimes confused with the gem topaz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ancient Egyptians called peridot the \u201cgem of the sun\u201d and\nbelieved it protected its wearers from terrors occurring during the night.\nAfter building in popularity among the Egyptians, peridot saw a revival in the\n1990s when deposits producing very fine grades of the gem were discovered in\nPakistan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, peridot is mined across the world, including in the\nUnited States. Some of the places you can find this green gemstone include\nArkansas, Arizona, Hawaii, Australia, Kenya, China, Myanmar, Pakistan, Sri\nLanka and more. In fact, at the turn of the 20th century, geologists were\nstumbling upon so many samples of peridot that they came up with a theory that\nbeneath the earth\u2019s core there was an \u201colivine layer\u201d of rock. However, this\ntheory is yet to be substantiated. <\/p>\n\n\n

Spiritual associations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Peridot has long been associated with certain spiritual\nmeanings. Early Christians actually considered this stone sacred, and Catholic\nbishops today still wear peridot and amethyst rings to symbolize purity. In\nother cultures, it\u2019s associated with harmony, good health, restful sleep,\npeacefulness and compassion, as well as believed to free the mind of envious\nthoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Priests believed it was connected to nature and used goblets\ncovered in the stone to speak with nature gods. In Hawaii, peridot once\nsymbolized the tears of Pele, the volcano goddess of fire who controlled the\nflow of lava. Some believe the name for the stone is rooted in the Greek word\n\u201cperidona,\u201d meaning \u201cgiving plenty,\u201d which is why it is often associated with\ngenerosity as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
