What are rubies?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Rubies are the red variety of the mineral corundum, which\nyou might recognize as the mineral sapphire is made of, too. In fact, all\ncolored corundum is considered a sapphire except<\/em>\nfor this particular gem. This red stone gets its color from the element\nchromium, and when treated to extreme heat and pressure over millions of years,\ncrystals are formed under the earth\u2019s surface. The presence of silica or iron,\ntwo minerals that are extremely common within the earth\u2019s crust, will prevent\nthe formation of ruby, making them one of the rarest stones known to man. Scientists have\nsaid<\/a> that it\u2019s a \u201cminor geological miracle\u201d that they\u2019re formed at all \u2014 we\u2019re\nactually still unsure how the exact conditions are met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their formation is not the only thing that makes this\nspecial stone so unique. The chromium that gives rubies their red color can\ncause fluorescence, which causes them to appear to glow like a fire from the\ninside out. However, chromium can also cause cracks and fissures, so few grow\nlarge enough to crystallize into gem-quality stones \u2014 another reason why they\u2019re\nso rare. Despite this, rubies are durable, rating a 9 on the Mohs scale of\nhardness, second only to diamond. This strength and fluorescence means the gem has\nuses beyond just jewelry; it\u2019s also used to create watches, medical instruments\nand even lasers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Myanmar (formerly Burma) is famous for its ruby deposits,\nproducing deep red stones that are known as \u201cPigeon\u2019s blood.\u201d Other deposits\nexist in Vietnam, Thailand, East Africa, India, parts of the Middle East and\neven certain areas of the United States. Thailand is today\u2019s main source and\nproduces gems of a dark red shade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Orient, this stone\nwas described as a \u201cdrop of the heart\u2019s blood of Mother Earth,\u201d while other\nancient cultures believed that they grew on trees like fruit, starting off as\nsmall white stones and ripening in the sun to the red gem we know today. In the\nMiddle Ages, these gems were viewed as a stone of prophecy, as well as having a\nnumber of purported health benefits. Ivan the Terrible of Russia stated that\nrubies were good for the heart, brain and memory, while in the 15th and 16th\ncenturies, they were thought to counteract poison and restore youth and\nvitality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was donated to the American Museum of Natural History in 1937, and later stolen in a notorious heist by J.R. Murphy in 1964. A massive ransom was paid by a wealthy businessman to get the DeLong Star Ruby back to its original home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Liberty Bell Ruby<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Discovered in the 1950s in eastern Africa, this stone is the\nlargest mined ruby known to man. It was sculpted to represent a miniature\nversion of the Liberty Bell, with 50 diamonds also included in its design. It\nwas stolen during a jewelry heist in 2014 and is unfortunately yet to be\nrecovered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
