A solitaire engagement ring is a piece of jewelry that features a single diamond on a setting by itself. This design allows the eye to completely focus on the diamond, as opposed to extra features that other types of engagement rings have. Because of this increased focus on the diamond itself, it’s incredibly important that it has a slightly higher-quality diamond than other rings.

Because solitaire engagement rings rely on the increased importance of the diamond’s quality, you’ll need to know a little bit about the 4Cs before you start to browse. The 4Cs of diamonds are cut, color, carat, and clarity. Below is a brief description of each:

Cut: This refers to the shape of the diamond, i.e. round cut diamond, princess cut diamond, cushion cut diamond, etc.

Color: When talking about the color of a diamond, the less color it has, the better. The color is graded on a scale of D-Z, with D being the most colorless diamond possible.

Carat Weight: Perhaps the most familiar of the Cs, this factor refers to the physical weight of a diamond.

Clarity: Clarity measures the amount of physical imperfections a diamond has. The imperfections are divided into two categories: inclusions and blemishes.
