The Making of a Heirloom

Step 1 --  Concept and Design
Shane Co. designers first hand-sketch their creations and then refine them using state-of-the-art computer-aided graphics.

Step 2 --  Artisan Carves Wax Model
Highly skilled artisans delicately hand-carve a master wax model of each unique Shane Co. design.

Step 3 --  Removal of Wax Model
The ring’s rubber mold is injected with 150° wax to create a duplicate. The mold is then carefully opened, revealing a Shane Co. master ring design.

Step 4 --  Master Molds, Models and Diamond Notes
Each Shane Co. design, master mold, and model is accompanied by a list of diamonds needed for the finished piece.

Step 5 --  Completed Wax Patterns
The wax ring models are arranged and ready to be mounted onto a sprue tree.

Step 6 --  Assembly of Sprue Tree
Each wax ring is individually hand-soldered onto the sprue tree.

Step 7 --  Gold/Platinum Sprue Tree
The sprue tree is weighed to determine the amount of gold or platinum needed to create a casting.

Step 8 --  Investment Poured Around Sprue Tree
A plaster-like material called investment is poured around the sprue tree to create a mold for casting.

Step 9 --  Kiln Oven
The wax rings are baked at 1350°, leaving an impression in the casting material. This process is called lost wax casting.

Step 10 --  Flask Removed from Kiln
After eight hours the flask is ready for the metal to be poured.

Step 11 --  Pouring Liquid Gold
Gold is heated to 1400° and then poured into the flask under a vacuum, filling the small cavities left by the wax sprue tree.

Step 12 --  Centrifuge Process for Platinum Jewelry
The platinum is melted at 3272°, and then the flask is spun at high velocity in a centrifuge to extract water and to properly distribute the casting material over the wax rings.

Step 13 --  Tree Removed, Cleaned, and Deoxidized
The flask is quenched in water to dissolve the investment molding, allowing the sprue tree to be removed. The tree is then cleaned, deoxidized and ready for cutting.

Step 14 --  Ring Castings Are Cut From Tree
Each casting is individually cut from the tree by hand in preparation for the finishing touch.

Step 15 --  Tumbling Process for Burnishing
The rings are magnetically tumbled with stainless steel shots to brighten the metal and burnish the rings to a high sheen.

Step 16 --  Sanding Process
Experienced jewelers individually hand-sand each Shane Co. ring to a smooth finish.

Step 17 --  Polishing Process
Before gemstones are added to the ring, the jeweler carefully hand-cleans and polishes the gold.

Step 18 --  Shane Co. Hand-matches Diamonds
All diamonds for Shane Co. rings are hand-sorted and hand-matched for color, cut, and size, and then sent to the gold manufacturer for setting.

Step 19 --  Jeweler Sets Diamonds
An expert jeweler hand-sets the diamonds in the new setting.

Step 20 --  Shane Co. Quality Control
Quality is assured when buying a Shane Co. ring. Each ring is carefully hand-inspected several times under 10x magnification before being made available for purchase.
